This Privacy Policy explains what information BestDehydrator.com (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects when you visit bestdehydrator.com, how we use it, and the choices you have. We keep data collection to a minimum: you can read every review, guide, and recipe on this site without creating an account or giving us any personal information.

Who We Are

BestDehydrator.com is an independent review site based in Portland, Oregon, that tests and reviews food dehydrators and publishes dehydrating guides and recipes. If you have any questions about this policy, email us at [email protected].

Information We Collect

Information you give us

  • Comments. If you leave a comment, we collect the name, email address, and website (optional) you enter, the comment itself, your IP address, and your browser’s user agent string. Your email address is never shown publicly.
  • Emails you send us. If you email us, we receive your email address, name (if included), and whatever you choose to write. We use it only to reply to you and, where relevant, to act on your message (for example, fixing a correction you reported).

Information collected automatically

  • Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site, such as which pages are read, how long visitors stay, what device and browser they use, their approximate location (country or city level), and how they found us. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to collect this information. We use it in aggregate to decide what to test and write about next; we do not use it to identify you personally.
  • Server logs. Like almost every website, our hosting server automatically records basic technical information for each request, such as IP address, browser type, the page requested, and the time of the request. These logs are used for security, troubleshooting, and preventing abuse.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. This site uses the following:

  • Analytics cookies set by Google Analytics (names starting with _ga), which help distinguish visitors and sessions. These typically last up to 2 years.
  • Comment cookies. If you leave a comment and choose to save your details, we store your name, email address, and website in cookies so you don’t need to retype them next time. These last one year.
  • Third-party cookies from Amazon and other retailers when you click an affiliate link (see below). These are set on the retailer’s site, not ours.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time. The site works fully without cookies, although your comment details won’t be remembered. You can also opt out of Google Analytics across all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

BestDehydrator.com is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Some links to other retailers may also be affiliate links.

When you click an affiliate link, you leave our site. Amazon and other third parties may place and read cookies in your browser, use web beacons, or collect information about your visit (such as the fact that you arrived from our site and what you purchase) in order to attribute sales and serve ads. That information is handled under the retailer’s own privacy policy, for example Amazon’s Privacy Notice. We never see your name, payment details, or address from these purchases. Amazon only reports to us which products were purchased, in aggregate.

Affiliate commissions never affect our ratings or recommendations. You pay the same price whether or not you use our links.

How We Use Your Information

  • To publish and moderate comments, and to protect the site from spam and abuse.
  • To reply to emails and act on corrections or testing requests.
  • To understand which content is useful so we can improve the site.
  • To keep the site secure and working properly.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Who We Share Information With

We only share information with the service providers that help us run the site:

  • Google (Google Analytics) receives usage data as described above. See Google’s Privacy Policy and how Google uses data from sites that use its services.
  • Automattic (Akismet) receives the content of comments along with the commenter’s name, email, IP address, and user agent, to check for spam. See Automattic’s Privacy Policy.
  • Automattic (Gravatar). If you comment, an anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be sent to Gravatar to check whether you have a profile picture there.
  • Our web host, which stores the site and its server logs.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our readers, ourselves, or others.

Our articles include share buttons for Facebook, Pinterest, and X (Twitter). These are plain links: nothing is loaded from those networks and no data is sent to them unless you click a button. If you do, the social network’s own privacy policy applies.

Embedded Content

Some articles may include embedded content from other websites, such as videos. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website, which may collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interaction with the embedded content.

How Long We Keep Your Information

  • Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely so follow-up comments can be approved automatically, unless you ask us to delete them.
  • Emails are kept only as long as needed to handle your message.
  • Google Analytics data is automatically deleted after the retention period set in our Google Analytics account (14 months).

Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, including the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, California, and other US states with privacy laws, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you and receive a copy of it.
  • Ask us to correct or delete your personal information.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.
  • Opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. We don’t sell or share personal information in that sense.

To make a request, email [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days and will not treat you differently for exercising your rights. If you are in the EEA or UK, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Where the GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interests to understand how the site is used, run and secure it, and prevent spam, and on your request when we reply to your emails. You can object to analytics at any time by blocking cookies or using the opt-out add-on linked above.

Children’s Privacy

This site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS and we take reasonable measures to protect the information we hold. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time, for example if we add new features or services. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
